high school tennis tryouts are in 2 days, and i'm extremely nervous. I'm a sophmore and i've played once a week with a private coach for about 1 1/2 years. However, i'm especially nervous because i have absolutely no tournament experience, and during the clinic, i usually lose because of my nerves. Any last minute drills or tips to relax while playing during the tryouts is greatly appreciated!

Get in all the practice you can before the tryouts. But don't go crazy over it. At this point all you can do is make sure you're rested up and eating well. Make sure you drink a lot of water so you don't get dehydrated. And not just gorging on water last minute. Drink tons for like a day or more if you can. Sleep. Don't sleep too much but get at least 8 hours. I know it's hard because of school work and stuff but you need to make it happen. As for the nerves, just let it go. What's the worst that can happen? Not making the team? So what if you don't make it. It's not like that changes how you feel about tennis. And if you don't make it ask the coach if you can be like a manager or something. That way you can practice and get better while playing with the teams and watching them play matches which helps with strategy. The most important thing before tryouts is to breathe. I know it sounds dumb but you need to make sure you're breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. As a tennis player myself I know that the first thing to go if you're nervous is your serve. There's not much you can do for that because it comes with experience. Just at least make sure you're getting your toss in front of you (but not too far in front) and over your head (but not directly in front of your head). Also try to not throw the ball too high because then you're waiting for it to come down. As for the other shots, don't try to aim unless you're really consistent where you're going to place it. If you still feel really nervous watch the spin on the ball. It sounds stupid but trust me it really works. Especially if EVERYTHING is going wrong. It takes your mind off your swing and puts it onto watching the ball. That's about all I have. Good luck and I hope this helped!

play a practice match with a friend. match practice is invaluable, and you should get as much as possible. Keep a posisitve attitude, don't get down on yourself, don't give up.

Just keep calm. I talk to myself when I'm nervous or need to win the next point. It really helps, tell yourself what you have to do. Take it one point at a time.
