Is there an expirery date on an a padi masters or open water dive licence?
You can actually stretch the ventricles within your lungs to allow you to hold your breath longer. Kind of like constantly overeating will stretch your stomach.Don't overdo it though. Once or twice a day is plenty.
Take in as much breath as you can hold, then start gulping tiny bits more. As much as possible...keep going. Do not strain any other pressure on your lungs, such as flexing your chest. Best if done in an upright position.
Like I said, one or two times a day.
In a month you will notice the difference.say an additional 30-70 seconds. After a year of progress, you will be amazed.
My best time is 9.05 minutes in 6 feet of water.
There are still many tribes in South America that practice this method to maintain lung power for pearl diving. 7-10 minutes is common.

Dont smoke, and deep breathe in and out several times each day. Eat healthy, and drink plenty of water.Oddly, it is not usually the lack of oxygen but the build-up of Co2 that makes it feel as though you cannot hold your breath any longer.
This is why for example, people dying from hypoxia - lack of oxygen - but able to exhale their CO2 tend to die quite relaxed - and indeed happy.
Point being, it is not so much about oxygenation - though it helps - as to limit the amount of co2 generated.
General fitness helps - as does keeping movement at the bottom of this well to a minimum.
A trick that underwater swimmers use is to release their breath by "singing / humming" a song and just letting themselves exhale gently but in a very regualr stream like that.
This is something you can practice on land just as easily as in the water.

This is a hypoxic workout. After you're done with it you'll be either close to or completely out of breath but it does miracles for you. I was able to cut my practice breaths for swimming in half from one breath every 2 strokes to one breath every 4.
