I've been shooting the renegade for over 20 years and tell you that granulated powder is appropriate. Pellets are built to be ignited from one end, as an in-line gun does. The side-feed ignition in a conventional muzzleloader may not reliably ignite pellets. Stick with #11 caps and blackpowder or a granulated substitute. These old-style weapons can be finicky and granulated powder allows for more adjustment in terms of powder charge than pellets. They love round balls, but will also shoot sabots and conicals. I've had good luck with 200-240 grain sabotted bullets and 70-80 grains black powder.

I to have a Renegade it is not designed for 209 unless altered.
I use the Number 11 percussion Caps. But for the powder pellets I use CCI magnum # 11 percussion caps to insure it ignites the pellets.
Be careful on loading the powder and do not exceed the amount recommended by the Manufacture, I hunt black powder and usually load mine 15% to 20% below maximum charge for best accuracy.

As mentioned you will need a #11 cap. Not a musket cap or a 209 shotgun primer. You might be better off with shooting a patched round ball as well. I do not know the exact rifling on a renegade and how it will do with the saboted rounds, but I do know that they shoot fine with a patched round ball. (You'll want a .490 or .495 roundball). Perfectly adequate for medium sized game. The patching is any cotton material (no nylon, etc) that is thick enough to press the lands into the cloth and bullet. (Pillow ticking works great, though I recommend running through the wash once). You can use spit for just target shooting and for hunting melting some good old Crisco and soaking the material in it the squeezing out the excess will make a good hunting patch.

Bound's hubby here:

If you need to switch from percussion caps to a 209 primer, you need to either contact Thompson Center (preferable) or find an after-market supplier of a nipple conversion kit. This should solve your problem.

Good luck.

BY ALL MEANS LOOK INTO THIS WITH INFO SUPPLIED BY THE MAKERS OF THE RIFLE AND ALSO THE PELLETS.
FROM WHAT I HAVE READ PELLETS ARE DESIGNED FOR IN-LINE WEAPONS ONLY AND NOT RECOMMENDED FOR YOUR TYPE.
THEY RECOMMEND YOU STICK WITH LOOSE POWDER
IMPROPER IGNITION AND HANG FIRES MAY RESULT
IF YOU LOOK AT THE PELLETS THERE IS A DARKER COATING ON ONE END WHICH TELLS YOU WHICH END TO PUT DOWN THE BARREL FIRST
THIS COATING HELPS IN THE IGNITION OF THE REMAINDER OF THE PELLET IN IN-LINE RIFLES, NOT THOSE THAT IGNITE WITH A FLASH HOLE ON THE SIDE.
