In The Olympics, Why Are There Multiple Contestants From The Same Country In One Event?
The Olympics were held for the first time in the Southern Hemisphere in Melbourne for the 1956 games (16th Olympiad). Due to quarantine laws in Australia the equestrian events were held in Stockholm Sweden! The host nation Australia finished 3rd overall, something we have never again achieved. In 2000 the Sydney Olympics we came 4th and also in 2004, though we won more golds(16 & 17 respectively compared to Melbourne's 13, which was our previous best total).
Though if you count performance by head of population we have thoroughly and routinely thrashed large nations like the USA, Britain, Germany, China and Russia for decades! :)
I have manic depression, can I compete in the "Special Olympics"?
If it is what I think it is, I think you are thinking of the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. Way before my time.
