Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Martial Art. It means the way (Do) of the foot (Tae) & hand (Kwon). As the name indicates, it is a striking style that emphasizes foot techniques. It's roots date back thousands of years to Tae Kyun (focused kicking). Along the way it has been heavily influenced by Chinese, Okinawan & Korean styles.
In modern form it was developed in the mid-late 1940's when Koreans returned from Japan & China with the fall of the Japanese Empire.
Question for martial artists, boxers, kickboxers, etc?
TaeKwon-Do is a Korean based Martial art but it also has a mix of karate and other styles mixed in.I have been practising it for the last five years and really enjoy the sport and the feeling of family it has brought to me.There are many different styles out there sadly and some are not as good as the others but that is the same with all things in life.
My instructor has done a few Martial arts in his time and says he enjoys the ITF style we do.Hope that helps.

Taekwondo (also spelled tae kwon do or taekwon-do) is a martial art originating in Korea. Having become one of the most widely practiced martial arts in the world, it is the national sport of Korea and one form of sparring, shihap kyeorugi, is an Olympic sporting event.
In Korean, derived from hanja, tae (跆) means to kick or strike with the foot"; kwon (拳) means "fist or to strike with the hand"; and do (道) means "way". Hence, taekwondo is loosely translated as "the way of the foot and hand". Taekwondo's popularity has resulted in the divergent evolution of the martial art. As with many other martial arts, taekwondo is a combination of combat technique, self-defense, sport, exercise, entertainment, and philosophy.
Although there are great doctrinal and technical differences among public and private taekwondo organizations, the art in general emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, using the leg's greater reach and power to disable the opponent from a distance. In sparring, turning (roundhouse), 45 degree, front, axe, reverse turning and side kicks are most often used; advanced kicks include jump, spin, and skip kicks, often in combination. Taekwondo training also includes a comprehensive system of blocks, punches, open-handed strikes, various take-downs or sweeps, throws, and some joint locks.

Any one know if shane still does wado ryu in gainborough on thursday night?
KICKS. IT HAS THE BEST KICKS AND IT ALSO HAS A LITTLE BIT OF HANDS.if YOU WANT TO PRACTICE MARTEL ARTS THEN YOU NEED WHO THE INSTRUCTOR STUDIED UNDER,WHY BECAUSE THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT STYLES. for instance if the instructor studied under won park they are judocwan teakwondo. They are grate in monovering and setting up a tequnique. They also throw a little bit of hopkido (a little bit of throws not a lot of it). I think if they have studyed under won park they also offer hopkido (in short its like a mixture of jujitsu and akido) but i'm not shure i cant really speak on that.

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art. Technically, it's not karate, but it's a martial art. It involves mostly kicks, emphasizing the feet as a more powerful weapon than the hands, though they do throw a few hand techniques in there. It's a lot like Tang Soo Do.
