"Distance covered" by players during a football match?

A number of television networks have started to highlight the "distance covered" by players during a televised 90-minute football (soccer) match, which averages 8-12 km per game. But how on Earth do they measure this for each player?!

Does Robbie Fowler deserve one more season at Liverpool?

opta stats do this and they no wot size every pitch is so if a player runs the length of the pitch twice it will get noted by a spotter, this then is sent back to the tv network, who then tell you a borin stat, this only happens on live games though due to there would have to be 22 spotters at every premier league game which would cost an awful lot of wages every week,

Using my trusty tape measure I can tell you that Christano Ronaldo actually ran 22.7 miles flat out during Manchester United's game against those Italian chaps last night. Georgeo Samaras and Bernardo Carradi have covered a total 375 yards all season for Manchester City......I support Manchester City by the way.
