3 time Champion has passed?
I liked chico. He had devestating power for a Jr. Lightweight and Lightweight. He has brought a hella of fight with Castillo twice and also his disapointing step up to welterweight. I would love to see more of a fighter who could have turned his career around. His future fights will missed.. Any other reactions?
I happen to have a very good imagination, and am good at envisioning things in my mind. Unfortunately this time, I read the following on secondsout.com: “He’s laying there as we speak with a helmet on his head under a sheet. It appears he was thrown a great distance,” and all I could see was Diego, helmet still on, sheet over him, being wheeled away from the scene of the crash by paramedics.
These tributes were also on secondsout.com. No doubt there will be countless more:
"Current IBF/IBO flyweight world champion Vic Darchinyan, who is also promoted by Gary Shaw, was shocked when told of Corrales passing.
“Chico and I spent some time together last year before my fights,” said Darchinyan. “I remember we were in the sauna one day talking as we were losing some weight. He was a nice guy and I liked him. Boxers are not scared of anything. He was a great fighter and a great man. I will miss him. He was so young. I can’t believe it.”
Guyana born Gairy St Clair lost a close twelve round points decision to Corrales in August 1998 in Sacramento in an IBF world title eliminator.
“He was just a young kid. I can’t believe he’s gone,” St Clair told SecondsOut. “Very sad. I remember when we fought. He was so tall for someone at junior lightweight. He was very soft spoken. I remember he was studying to be a chef back then. It’s sad to hear it. Diego was a cool guy.”
Rest in peace, Diego. You were a great entertainer, a fearless warrior in a potentailly dangerous sport, and will no doubt be inducted into the Hall Of Fame soon.
May Diego Corrales rest in peace, he was a true warrior who gave it his all and left this Earth too soon. God bless his family and those he left behind.
